North West Cancer Research and KidsCan Research Development Grant (RDG)

The below terms of reference are to aid submission of proposals:

• Funding is available to researchers working in institutions (academic, NHS, and other) across the UK, however, a strong focus must be placed on benefitting those living in the North West of England and North Wales

• Any sum can be requested up to a maximum of £20,000 but the charities are likely to make several grants within the total funding envelope. The average award made under this scheme is expected to be around £10,000. Please note that funds must be spent within 24 months of the project award date.

• The most important quality that the charities are looking for is outstanding cancer research in the form of new pilot projects, which have a strong potential to lead to projects and/or programme grants.

• All projects should concentrate on cancers that specifically affect children. Projects might include:

1. Discovery science

2. Translational work

3. The study of, and improvement to techniques and/or treatments

4. Regional variations in childhood cancers

5. Inequalities

6. Psycho-social oncology

7. Studies which focus on the late-effects of cancer treatment

• All studies should be relevant to the people of the North West of England and / or North Wales. Where appropriate studies may also embrace the families, carers and guardians of young people affected by cancer;

• Proposals for matched funding for access to-, use of- and/or purchase of- multiuser equipment will be considered;

• Proposals for travel assistance and short research placements to encourage collaborations and knowledge exchange between laboratories, which will lead to successful project and/or programme grants, will be considered.
