North West Cancer Research and Merseyside Against Blood Cancers are delighted to be working together to fund a number of research development grants.

The deadline for submission is 5pm on 31 July 2026. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated on a competitive basis by the North West Cancer Research and Merseyside Against Blood Cancers panel, and the outcome ratified by our board of trustees. We expect applicants to be informed of the outcome by 30 September 2026.

The below terms of reference are to aid submission of proposals:

  • Funding is available to early career researchers working in Universities across the Merseyside footprint including Liverpool John Moores University and Edge Hill University

  • Any sum can be requested up to a maximum of £25,000 but the charities are likely to make several grants within the total funding envelope. The average award made under this scheme is expected to be around £10,000. Please note that funds must be spent within 24 months of the project award date.

  • The most important quality that the charities are looking for is outstanding cancer research in the form of new pilot projects, which have a strong potential to lead to projects and/or programme grants.

  • All projects should concentrate on a singular or multiple blood cancer(s) type, techniques and/or treatments which are most relevant to the people of Merseyside;

  • Proposals for matched funding for access to-, use of- and/or purchase of- multiuser equipment will be considered;

  • Proposals for travel assistance and short research placements to encourage collaborations and knowledge exchange between laboratories, which will lead to successful project and/or programme grants, will be considered.

  • Staff salaries will not be granted, but consideration will be given for temporary post-doctoral roles.
