Rhiannon’s motivation comes from the memory of her younger brother, Nathan. After living with ulcerative colitis, Nathan spent a year travelling the world in a camper van with his partner, Hannah. Shortly after returning home, he was diagnosed with bowel cancer that had already spread. He was just 26, and within three weeks, Rhiannon and her family had sadly lost him.
The same year brought further heartbreak with the loss of Rhiannon’s colleague Debbie to a rare bladder tumour, leaving behind two young boys and a devastated team. More recently, Hannah also lost her grandmother to kidney cancer.
“It has been hard and is still difficult to talk about even though it’s been several years, the loss never gets any easier,” Rhiannon says.
Finding Strength in Every Mile
In June last year, Rhiannon turned to running to help cope. By December, she completed her first half marathon—something she never imagined possible. Inspired by Hannah, they committed to running one every month throughout 2026, while raising funds for a local cause close to their hearts.
Balancing training with life is no small feat. Rhiannon manages a busy veterinary practice and is mum to a three-year-old, while Hannah works as an illustrator, often late into the night. Despite the challenge, Rhiannon continues:
“I still see myself as a novice runner… I’m just doing everything I can to be as prepared as possible.”
Now halfway through their journey, each race is a tribute—honouring loved ones while supporting vital research. Their next run is the Jubilee Bridge half marathon on 7th June.
Rhiannon’s inspiring story has also been featured in the Wirral Globe, highlighting her impact across the local community.
