Every mile for mum: Geoff's 100-mile challenge

For Geoff Nuzum, fundraising isn’t just a yearly activity — it’s a lifelong mission motivated by loss and determination.

Geoff lost his mum, Dorothy, to breast cancer when he was 11 and she was only 46. Since then, he has devoted countless miles, mountains, and milestones to honour her memory and support people facing cancer.

Each year, Geoff chooses a new challenge to raise money for cancer charities. Last year, he cycled 50 miles across the Welsh hills to mark the 50th anniversary of his mum’s passing. This July, he is doubling the distance with the 100‑mile Liverpool–Chester–Liverpool ride.

This Year’s Challenge

Geoff first heard about the Liverpool–Chester–Liverpool event from cyclists passing near his home in Runcorn. So, when he saw this year’s event advertised, he signed up immediately.

“I feel it is important to do at least one event a year to raise money in aid of supporting a cancer charity,” Geoff says. “Anything that can be done to find a cure for cancer, in particular breast cancer, has my support.”

A keen cyclist with plenty of mountain biking experience, Geoff is excited to return to his road bike for something new. He has never taken on this event before, but with several 100‑mile training rides under his belt, he feels confident heading into July.

He thrives on having a goal to work towards. “It’s a once‑in‑a‑lifetime challenge,” Geoff says. “I’m looking forward to the satisfaction at the end of the day knowing I did it.”

Fundraising With Heart

Geoff is determined to exceed his fundraising targets and is not afraid to get creative. Last year, to boost donations, he pledged to complete his Welsh ride in a bright pink suit if supporters helped him hit £1,000. They delivered, and true to his word, Geoff powered across the hills in a blaze of pink.

This year, his tactics continue. “I badger everyone at work to get involved,” he laughs. “Last month, I sent an email on payday asking people to donate. That helped me get £150 in just 24 hours.”

His original goal of £250 has already been passed, and he is now aiming for at least £500, a target he will likely surpass, perhaps with another eye‑catching twist.

We’re incredibly grateful to Geoff for his determination and for choosing to ride for North West Cancer Research. Every penny he raises will help fund vital research into cancers that affect people across our region — supporting innovative studies, improving outcomes, and bringing us nearer to a future without cancer.

Geoff shares regular training updates and photos of his beloved dogs (the “Scamps”) on his fundraising page. Click here to follow along and support Geoff’s 100‑mile challenge.

We’ll catch up with Geoff after his ride to celebrate. Good luck, Geoff!
