One ride, two reasons: Chris's 100-mile challenge
On Sunday, 5th July, Chris Dewsbury will take on his first 100-mile Liverpool–Chester–Liverpool challenge to raise money for North West Cancer Research.
On Sunday, 5th July, Chris Dewsbury will take on his first 100-mile Liverpool–Chester–Liverpool challenge to raise money for North West Cancer Research.
When Chris’s father told him about the event a few months ago, Chris quickly decided it was a great way to support a cause that means a lot to him.
In the past year, cancer has affected Chris’s life twice. Last August, his friend James found out he had a bowel tumour during surgery to remove an obstruction, in an unexpected discovery that helped save his life. Chris shared, about James: “He is still undergoing chemotherapy, but has remained incredibly positive throughout. His attitude has been a real source of inspiration.”
Sadly, Chris’s connection to this cause runs even deeper. He recently lost his uncle Rob to a brief but devastating illness, turning this challenge into an even more meaningful tribute.
“Rob was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and fought it with everything he had. After months of chemotherapy and treatment, he passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, the 13th of March, surrounded by his family at home.”
Going the Extra Mile
Chris and a group of friends will ride the 50-mile Liverpool–Chester–Liverpool route together. After that, Chris will keep going on his own to reach 100 miles, riding a route he knows well, but this time with purpose.
“If I know one thing about myself, it's that I don't do things by halves, so I decided to take on an extra 50 miles solo, bringing my total to 100 miles. My Dad and some close friends will be joining me at the end to help carry me across the finish line.”
Training has been tough. As a husband and father of two, he fits rides around family life, making time for lunchtime spin classes and longer weekend sessions when possible. “It's been hard work getting back into it, but I've managed to smash some PRs wearing the North West Cancer Research jersey!”
Thank you, Chris!
We are very grateful to Chris and his friends for choosing to ride for North West Cancer Research. Their efforts will help fund important research into cancers that affect people in our region. Every pound raised supports new studies, improves outcomes, and brings us closer to a future without cancer.
We’ll catch up with Chris after the ride to share his experience. Good luck, Chris!
