Birkenhead Runner Set to Conquer the London Marathon for Local Cancer Research
A runner from Birkenhead is preparing to take on his first London Marathon in aid of North West Cancer Research.
46-year-old Alex Innes will join up to 50,000 runners to complete the famous course on Sunday 21st April, raising vital funds for cancer research projects after losing several family members to the disease.
Alex tragically lost both of his parents, grandparents and two aunties to cancer, with his mum passing at only 33 years old from cervical cancer.
Most recently Alex almost lost his best friend Jimmy to bowel cancer, who is now in recovery after two major surgeries and working for North West Cancer Research.
Alex’s new challenge of the London Marathon follows his participation in the Charity’s Cycle of Hope event last year, which saw him cycle 60 miles around Merseyside and Lancashire.
Alex said: “All in all cancer has affected my life in quite a big way, and I know I’m not alone there so I feel very motivated to run this marathon and raise as much as I can in order to fight it. I’m hopeful that with dedicated work from organisations like North West Cancer Research, nobody else will have to go through what I have.
“Training has been going well and I would say that I feel ready! I’ve been doing one long run per week, the longest of which was 18.5 miles. I’m really looking forward to running the London Marathon finally – it’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid, so when the opportunity came up, I couldn’t turn it down. I’m most looking forward to the amazing crowds, the general atmosphere and that feeling you get when you cross the finish line. And maybe a nice cold beer at the end!”
