Putting our region's cancer needs first

North West Cancer Research and Rutherford Direct calling on cyclists to help stop cancer in its tracks

North West Cancer Research is asking cyclists to dust off their saddles and hop on their bikes again this year for their annual Cycle for Hope fundraiser on 4 July.

Rutherford Direct and NWCR

Sponsored by Rutherford Direct, the event, now in its third year, will take a different format this year, with the aim of attracting more cyclists of all abilities to get involved.

Rather than a four-day cycle from Liverpool to Dublin, this year’s participants can choose from either a gentle 60km journey or a more challenging 60mile course, both starting and finishing at Southport Rugby Club.

Whichever route they choose, they will be rewarded with some of Merseyside and Lancashire’s finest views, as they head from Southport and travel South East and then North, completing a loop of the region’s picturesque countryside.

All money raised from the challenge will support funding for life-saving cancer research and education projects in the North West and North Wales.

Alastair Richards, CEO North West Cancer Research said: “After a really tough year for everyone, this year’s Cycle of Hope is a great opportunity for people to get back together and get behind a good cause.

“This year we’ve changed the format to make it easier for more people to get involved and to ensure we can operate the event safely, with appropriate social distancing and Covid 19 restrictions in place.

“The new routes we’ve chosen offer the very best of our region’s countryside terrain – all of which we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep.

“We hope as many people as possible will get out on two wheels, show their support and help raise money for life-saving cancer research across the North West. I for one will be getting involved and cannot wait to see our fundraisers in action on the day!”

For the second year running, Cycle of Hope will be sponsored by Rutherford Direct, an affordable membership plan that provides comprehensive cancer treatment for families and corporates.

Rutherford Direct is the UK’s first cancer support membership plan which offers companies and individuals a full cancer support and benefits scheme.

Mike Moran, chief executive of Rutherford Health, said: “We are extremely proud to be returning as sponsors of this event. The scourge of cancer has been brought home to us all during the Covid-19 pandemic and we fully support great initiatives such as this which all contribute towards cancer research. “

“Rutherford Direct has been launched as the UK’s first ever cancer support membership plan and makes the best cancer care available to more people. It is a fully private pathway for members, providing relief to the NHS. “

Alastair added: “On behalf of the charity, I would like to thank Mike and the team at Rutherford Direct for their support yet again for Cycle of Hope, which has been vital in ensuring this year’s event can go ahead as planned. “

Entries for the year’s Cycle of Hope are now open and cost just £20 per person to enter, with a minimum fundraising requirement of £30. All participants will receive a medal.
